The past two days in our unit at Tacoma General have not been for the faint of heart. An emergency was transferred in from an outside facility and required ECMO cannulation. John was the scrub nurse on call for that procedure. While he has been an RN in our unit for many years, he is new to the scrub role. It has been a natural transition - John helped the surgeons perform an ECMO cannulation on this child. He remained calm even in the midst of an emergency situation.

The next morning, he came back to work and functioned in the circulator role as this child returned to surgery. He utilized his HRO behaviors of embracing a questioning mindset while communicating with the team of pediatric surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, and ECMO specialists to create a smooth transition of care from unit to unit. The collaboration and coordination of all involved led to a successful surgery. The patient safely had surgery completed twice, thanks to John's expertise. He is always a team player and gives kudos to everyone he works with - it's well overdue for kudos to be given to him this time!
