Riley's determination transformed what could have been a night defined solely by loss into one marked by compassion, faith, and humanity.
One night, an unconscious and unresponsive patient arrived in the RRMC Emergency Department trauma bay. He required intubation, and subsequent CT imaging revealed devastating bilateral subarachnoid hemorrhage. As the gravity of the situation became clear, his family gathered at the bedside, overwhelmed with shock and grief.
The family shared that the patient was deeply rooted in the Catholic faith. As the conversation turned towards the possibility of compassionate extubation, they expressed one unwavering wish: no further acute interventions were to be taken, and they did not want their loved one extubated until he had received his last rites from a catholic priest.
This sacrament was not simply a ritual to them - it was a sacred, final act of faith and love. In the middle of the night, when resources are scarce and doors often feel closed, this nurse took his request to heart. Understanding what this meant for both the patient and his family, the nurse made it her personal mission to honor their wishes. The nurse began calling local churches and parishes one by one. Many calls went unanswered, others reached voicemail, and several resulted in firm refusals due to the late hour. Each call was another dead end, another reminder of how impossible this request seemed.
Yet, this nurse did not give up. Despite repeated obstacles and the emotional weight of the moment, the nurse continued to advocate tirelessly for this patient and the family. Long after many would have accepted defeat, the nurse pressed on - driven by compassion, respect for the patient's faith, and a deep understanding of how vital closure would be for the family.
At approximately 2:30 am when hope was nearly gone, the nurse received a call back from a Father of a local parish. After speaking with the nurse and understanding the urgency and significance of the situation, the Father agreed to come immediately. Within 20 minutes, he arrived at the bedside to administer last rites, granting the patient dignity in his final moments and providing immeasurable comfort and peace to his grieving family.
Riley's determination transformed what could have been a night defined solely by loss into one marked by compassion, faith, and humanity. Riley's actions went far beyond clinical care - she honored a life, upheld a family’s beliefs, and ensured that the patient’s final wishes were respected. This act of extraordinary advocacy and empathy exemplifies the very essence of what it means to be a DAISY nurse.
