This team recognized that healing goes beyond medicine. They took the time to understand his interests, his communication style, and his emotional needs.
The Telemetry unit is being recognized for its exceptional care, compassion, and commitment to a young patient with autism. Their efforts went far beyond the standard clinical responsibilities, creating a nurturing and inclusive environment that had a lasting impact on both the patient and all who witnessed their dedication.

When our patient was admitted, it was clear that he had unique needs. As a young individual, in comparison to our normal demographic, his hospitalization could have been overwhelming and isolating. Instead, he found a second family in the Telemetry Unit - a group of nurses, patient care technicians, and support staff embraced him not just as a patient, but as a person.

This team recognized that healing goes beyond medicine. They took the time to understand his interests, his communication style, and his emotional needs. When they learned he was interested in learning numbers, they created informal lessons to help him count and recognize numbers. They brought in puzzles and educational games to help stimulate his mind and keep him engaged. What began as small gestures quickly evolved into a full, personalized approach to care.

Noticing that he needed clothes and proper footwear, team members purchased items out of their own pockets - shirts, pants, shoes, underwear - ensuring that he had the dignity and comfort he deserved. These were not required tasks. They were acts of compassion and humanity. The team didn't just care for him; they cared about him.

They made it a point to celebrate his achievements, both big and small. When he responded well to instructions or participated actively in his care, we rewarded him with small prizes, often tailored to his interests - like spotting red and blue birds and playing with his orange ball outside, his favorite activities. These activities not only encouraged participation but also boosted his confidence and sense of belonging.

During Nurses Week, they went a step further and invited him to be a part of the celebration. This action of inclusion gave him a sense of purpose and belonging, allowing him to feel that he was not just a patient, but a member of the team - a valued part of the Telemetry family.

The word team doesn't do justice to what this group has accomplished. They created a therapeutic space filled with patience, joy, and dignity. Each shift, someone stepped up to make sure the patient felt seen and heard. They learned to read his non-verbal cues, adapt their communication styles, and coordinate with each other to maintain consistency and trust - critical components in the care of a person with autism.

Caring for a patient is about human connection. They have shown empathy, action, creating a safe, responsive, and inclusive environment where healing could occur, not just in the body, but in the spirit.

Their actions embody the core values of nursing: compassion, advocacy, integrity, and excellence. I am so proud of every person on the Telemetry Unit.

Thank you, Team Telemetry, for always being up to the challenge and shining your light.
