Our daughter was admitted to the oncology/hematology unit one week ago. During this tumultuous time, a few standout nurses took the initiative to go above and beyond their scope of care. They took in our daughter at her lowest point, physically and emotionally. Despite her emotions, they took the time to get to know her interests. They came alongside her pain and anxiety.
Nurse Angela Gianni took the time to make her a badge to mark her time at the hospital. She conferred with nurse Delfina about Moxi. They would program Moxi to “visit” her and write her notes as an incentive to take her well-needed but detested meds. Nurse Angela worked closely with the Child life specialist, Erin. They created that “nurse badge” for our daughter and gave her an Elsa doll to see the PICC line and the BP cuff. This was all meant to help her transition and to inform her about the scary changes around her, but to reassure her that they were there to help.
From a parent's perspective, they took the time to inform us of the meds and lab work. We weren’t just a patient in the way of their busy workday. They really took the time to provide resources, reassure us when we weren’t versed in medical lingo, and take our hands and shoulder our current medical situation with her. Any patient would be lucky to be under her care. She lives up to her reputation of CHLA's exceptional care. Especially with young, tender four-year-olds.
