Clare does not manage from a distance. Her door is always open, and she is a constant, reassuring presence on the floor, not just for our patients but for every member of our team.
I have had the privilege of working with Clare for over three years, and in that time, I have witnessed a leader who not only excels in her role but also elevates everyone around her through her hands-on approach. I have been working at JSUMC for over 15 years. She is the first leader to exhibit the will to get involved on the front lines and make positive changes for the betterment of the patients and the staff.

Clare is more than a manager. She leads by example, consistently demonstrating the clinical excellence and compassionate care that the DAISY Award celebrates. She doesn't just speak, she acts. Clare does not manage from a distance. Her door is always open, and she is a constant, reassuring presence on the floor, not just for our patients but for every member of our team. Believe it or not, when the unit is critically short, she has put her 'staff nurse cap' back on, taken patient assignments, stayed at the nursing desk, and even has taken admissions. This is a first in my career here, and what a refreshing feeling it is to have a leader at your side and have your back.

Clare demonstrates a shared sense of responsibility and validates the hard work of her team. Her approachability fosters an environment of trust and open communication, where nurses feel comfortable raising concerns and seeking guidance. Clare has cultivated a work environment where mutual respect and trust are not just encouraged but are the standard. She understands the immense pressures of nursing.

I recall a particularly challenging week when our unit was at full capacity, and the acuity of our patients was exceptionally high. Staff morale was low, and we were all feeling the strain. Clare is the kind of leader who makes all feel the strain. Clare didn't hide in her office. Instead, she was right there with us, answering calls, talking with anxious patients, and even helping with the flow of the unit, such as participating in the treatment team and expediting discharges in a timely manner. Her presence alone was a powerful message: "We are in this together." She even missed a professional conference that week to fulfill the needs of her unit.

Clare understands that by being present, she has a unique and unfiltered view of the daily challenges faced by their staff and patients. She is quick to identify systemic issues, such as equipment shortages or workflow inefficiencies, and is relentless in advocating for the resources and changes needed to solve them. Clare is a crucial link between the front-line staff and upper management. Clare motivates our team with a shared vision for excellent patient outcomes. She celebrates our successes, no matter how small, and helps us learn from our challenges without placing blame.

Her leadership has not only improved patient satisfaction on our unit but has also increased staff nursing morale. She makes you proud to be a nurse and motivates you to show up because that's what she does! She is a true advocate for both her staff and her patients. She embodies the very essence of the DAISY Award.
