Matt would make me laugh or smile when I wanted to cry
I just read why this award was formed and how the name is made, and I’m absolutely ecstatic! Since I got the gastric bypass 17 years ago my immune system has gone down the tubes; I have been sent from Dr to Dr; from one hospital to another but not one have made me feel heard, understood and cared for as much as this hospital and it’s people (I don’t want to use staff because they are more than that). I hope the people in charge understand how unbelievably lucky they are in this wonderful hospital. Ok, now about the best nurse I have had in my 46 years - Matt Moro; he went out of his way to make sure my pain was under control, and the one time that the pain was unbearable, he continually kept checking on me while trying to get hold of the Dr or residents. He brought me ice and hot packs, trying to ease the pain anyway he could. Matt would make me laugh or smile when I wanted to cry; he apologized over and over and I kept telling him it was ok that I realize this is a very busy place and I know there are people that are totally worse than I am; he kept telling me that that doesn’t matter; that he wished he could help me with the pain faster. He made me feel cared for and that I am in the right place, finally! I have been in almost every hospital around here over the past 15 years, and never once have I felt this cared for - like I really mattered. The staff and doctors here have made me look at everything differently. They made me feel like my pain does matter; that I matter! This hospital is the best hospital I have ever been to and will only bring my family here in the future! But back to Matt - he also went out of his way for my roommate, a sweet older woman who recently found out she has cancer. I'm not sure what her other issues were, but I think she had already been there for 9 days before I got there. He came in constantly checking on her, making sure she was ok, and spoke to her with so much compassion; it made both of us feel loved by him; he wasn’t only there for us physically, he was there for us mentally. He made sure we both understood what was happening all the time. We were his “easier patients”; we could see by his hair standing up at times when his day was hectic, but still came and made time to talk and joke. I know I have been rambling. I really hope you understand how amazing a nurse you have. I hope you treat him well. He loves your hospital and speaks of it with such pride, and again, I have been to so many hospitals and have talked to so many nurses and have never been so touched by one. You have a star nurse there; got a lot to learn from him. I’m going to stop after I say one more thing. Thank you! Your hospital is amazing! They have been the most wonderful, amazing, caring people from checking in to the ER. Even before that, the security people made me laugh when they saw I was nervous; to the wonderful ER, the people cleaning the rooms, and the amazing, friendly man who brought me my veggie broth every day. All the students were amazing, as were the doctors who actually listened to me, and the nurses who cared. I felt heard and cared for, thank you! Oh, and the man who came to help me get free scripts and help with Medicare, I cried with relief after he visited me.
