The first night we had Sarah was pretty crazy from our perspective, and she really showed us how intensely she cares for her patients.
The entire nursing staff has been nothing short of amazing, much like the first time we were here for my son’s Norwood operation. This time we are back for his Glenn operation which is known to keep nurses, doctors, and families on their toes due to the post surgical phenomenon “Glenn Head.”
The first night we had Sarah was pretty crazy from our perspective, and she really showed us how intensely she cares for her patients. Immediately after getting the rundown from the previous shift's nurse, she started talking to us to learn as much as she could about our son on his first post op night. She wanted to know calming techniques, his favorite types of toys, where he likes to be pat, and basically just a full behavioral rundown.
At first we were shocked but then soon realized just why she needed all this information, my son was waking up from his anesthesia and became a little menace. We simply saw someone we believe to be not only a fantastic professional but also a passionate one. She worked tirelessly through the night with his doctors, the other nurses, and the menace himself to get him into a calm and cool state.
The questions and concerns my wife and I were asking her, she was advocating to the doctors, and used the resources around her to answer all the strange questions we had. Sarah kept us calm and informed the entire time. Without Sarah, it is hard to imagine the type of night we would’ve experienced. She assured us his behavior was normal and expected and explained the steps they were taking to make him more comfortable. Not just that night, but the three consecutive nights we have had Sarah, she has comforted us and kept us informed with all the updates we missed.
Sarah is also extremely knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. She educated us on all the medicines and therapies our son was receiving and why he was getting them. We are truly blessed to have had our son under the care of Sarah and cannot wait to have her again in a few years for his Fontan. Her experience and good demeanor kept us grounded and made a meaningful difference in our extremely emotional week.
