I believe that, due to Kevin’s dedication to the patient, the patient is alive.
Kevin had already clocked out at the conclusion of his Emergency Department shift. While exiting the hospital, he noticed a patient who appeared distressed. The patient appeared to be struggling to enter the Emergency Department lobby area. Even though Kevin was already off the clock, he took the initiative to quickly secure a wheelchair and assist the patient into the lobby.

Upon getting the patient inside the lobby, Kevin rapidly assessed the patient and believed the patient to be having an acute cardiac event. Speculating the patient was high acuity based on his clinical presentation, Kevin bypassed the triage line, registered the patient, and performed an EKG. The patient was having a STEMI. Kevin alerted the bed placement and wheeled the patient to his assigned room. Kevin assisted the patient into the room, helping the staff nurses undress the patient and get them into the bed.

As the patient was placed in the bed, the patient coded. Kevin stayed to assist with resuscitation measures until other staff arrived. Resuscitation efforts were continued for nearly an hour until the patient achieved ROSC. The patient made it to the Cath lab and then to the ICU, where they went on ECMO. The patient is now off of ECMO and completely neurologically intact. I believe that, due to Kevin’s dedication to the patient, the patient is alive.
