She shows the compassion needed to make a difference in the lives of others.
Nicole Manning, BSN, RN, MEDSURG-BC is a clinical supervisor on 11B at Carolinas Medical Center and does so many things above and beyond what is expected from her. She finds time to do this while obtaining her BSN, serving as magnet champion, Symplr champion, Workday champion, community engagement champion, and balancing her children’s busy schedules. She is consistently focused on enhancing our patients’ outcomes in ways beyond their medical needs. She knows first and foremost that this isn’t possible without teammate engagement and well-being.

Nicole works closely with our wellness champion to plan and execute activities to ensure our team can care for our patients. In January, she organized a 4-week wellness challenge that encompassed not just physical health but also mental health. Each participant engaged in different activities throughout the month and shared their experiences with the team.

In February, she put together personalized Valentine’s Day cards and small gifts for each teammate. She also did superlatives on the unit, recognizing each teammate’s unique talent, like awarding me “most likely to buy the team lunch.” In May 2024, she put together a superhero day, in which she brought in costumes so teammates could dress up, take pictures, and share the joy with our team.

In November, she put together a walking challenge, called “Walk and Wobble before the Gobble Gobble” to help our teammates stay active as we go into the holiday season. She has also done fun engagement activities, routinely at morning huddle, to embrace new hires so they can learn some things about the team and the team can get to know the new hire.

Beyond what she does for our teammates, she does for our patients and for our community as well. Nicole has served for many years as our community engagement champion. She has organized several donation drives for women’s shelters, men’s shelters, and winter clothing drives.

We recently had a patient transferred to us from another facility for an extended stay. Nicole connected with the patient and realized he had recently lost his home and all his belongings. Nicole quickly went to work, collecting donations for this patient. We were able to get a large Atrium Health duffle bag and fill it with clothing, shoes and toiletries. The patient was brought to tears when this was presented to him upon his discharge after his extended stay.

Nicole also recently advocated for a patient who had a poor prognosis and a complicated family situation that only prolonged the patient's suffering. She worked with other members of the care team to ensure that all ethical options were considered and that nursing was doing all we could for the patient's benefit. She also ensured the family had the appropriate support available, as this was a difficult situation for them.

These are just a few examples of Nicole’s unwavering support for the wellness of others. She shows the compassion needed to make a difference in the lives of others. When I hear the story of Patrick Barnes and the experience he and his family had with nurses, I quickly think of Nicole and how she stands out above the rest to ensure the wellness of the entire care team, as she knows to ensure great patient care, the team must care for themselves first.
