Madeline was right there, telling her that she could do it and cheering her on when she was feeling down.
Our daughter M was admitted to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital after she was seen. She was admitted immediately to the PICU with a diagnosis of Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension. M is a healthy 15-year-old who has had no previous serious medical history. Not only was this hospital scary for her, but also scary for us as parents. We were blessed to have Madeline Irvin, RN, as our nurse for many shifts in the PICU. Madeline was so good with our M and always provided comfort, compassion, and encouragement. We had a few rough days in PICU, and M didn't think she could get up and walk to the bathroom or walk to the shower. Madeline was right there, telling her that she could do it and cheering her on when she was feeling down. Madeline also pushed her outside of her comfort zone to try and do more physically, and our girl would do it. M and Madeline built a great friendship during our time in PICU, and she always wanted to see Madeline as her nurse during every shift change. To make Madeline even more deserving of the DAISY Award, she went above and beyond the day M was discharged from the PICU. We received notification that M would be moving to the 3rd floor. While we were waiting for the transfer off of PICU, Madeline came in and told M and us that she would be taking care of her on the 3rd floor. Madeline contacted her nursing supervisor to let her know that the census was low on the PICU and she would like to transfer down with M to the 3rd floor for the rest of her nursing shift. It was approved by both unit nursing supervisors, and Madeline was with us the whole time as we moved to the new unit. M was really nervous to be moving out of PICU because she still wasn't feeling the best, but her eyes lit up when she knew Madeline was going with us. Not only did Madeline make sure that we were comfortable in the new room, but she also made sure that M was feeling better by boosting her confidence and supporting her. The connection that Madeline made to our M was one of the most beautiful things to come out of our hospital stay. I have never seen a pediatric nurse build a trusting, safe, and inspiring relationship with a patient almost immediately. Every time we had Madeline as our nurse, the room lit up with hope, joy, and endless support. Madeline encouraged M to push a little more and to go a little farther, and I believe that is what helped heal her. Madeline also came to visit M even when she wasn't working on the 3rd floor before her shift to check on her and say hello. The smile on M's face when Madeline came to visit was incredibly touching. Madeline is not just a nurse; she is an extraordinary nurse. We owe a lot to Madeline for all of her care of M, and we don't think she would have progressed as quickly as she did without her. Madeline continued to go above and beyond every single time, all with a big smile on her face. She made such a positive impact on our M, and we will forever be grateful. I write this nomination for the DAISY Award on behalf of our family, but also on behalf of M. She saw the DAISY Award flyer and asked if we could please nominate Madeline for the award. Madeline has left a lasting impression on all of our hearts, and Cardinal Glennon is blessed to have her as a nurse. We will never forget the impact that Madeline made on M's life as well as ours.
