Palliative care/end-of-life care as a nurse is often difficult; however, Bre ensured she provided this family and the patient with an outstanding level of care and comfort.
My colleague, Bre, provided the utmost patient and family-centered palliative end-of-life care. She was patient, compassionate, and attentive, and truly demonstrated all the SickKids values to the highest degree during this night. She ensured that the patient was comfortable and made sure the family felt heard and respected during this difficult time. She provided the family with unwavering support, gave them space when they needed it, and answered all the questions the family had.
Palliative care/end-of-life care as a nurse is often difficult; however, Bre ensured she provided this family and the patient with an outstanding level of care and comfort. Her bedside manner is truly remarkable, and the care and compassion she took with every nursing care, conversation, non-verbal communication, and her body language, all to ensure that this family and patient could feel like they were truly in the best hands.
After the patient had passed, Bre ensured she was there for the family and the patient, providing them compassion, empathy, and warmth. She ensured that whatever they needed to best support them at this time was done to the best of her ability. She worked with the family about timelines for when to do the molds, the handprints, and footprints, and other memorial pieces that the family can create from our PACT carts. She spent the remainder of her shift attending to the patient and family during this difficult time. I wanted to nominate Bre for a DAISY award, as the situation above is just one of many examples of Bre providing outstanding, collaborative, and supportive patient- and family-centered care. Her unwavering compassion and empathy make every family feel truly valued and heard, demonstrating the incredible impact she has on those she cares for.
