He is deeply attuned to the emotional and psychological needs of the patients in his care, and his ability to de-escalate with empathy has repeatedly prevented incidents and helped restore a sense of safety and trust.
We are honored to nominate Joseph Martin, MSN, BSN, RN, PMH-BC, for the DAISY Award. Joseph exemplifies what it means to be a compassionate, skilled, and deeply committed nurse. His consistent dedication to our patients and our team sets a powerful example of excellence in behavioral health nursing.
Joseph brings a rare calm and steady presence to our unit, regardless of how challenging the situation may be. He treats every patient with dignity and compassion, whether providing emotional support during a crisis or ensuring the patient’s basic needs are met. He is deeply attuned to the emotional and psychological needs of the patients in his care, and his ability to de-escalate with empathy has repeatedly prevented incidents and helped restore a sense of safety and trust. He consistently goes above and beyond for both patients and staff. He takes time to thoroughly explain care plans to anxious family members. Joseph always leads with kindness, patience, and deep clinical skill. Parents and patients often mention his kindness by name on patient experience surveys.
His impact is evident not only to staff but also to patients themselves. Several of our patients have taken the time to write Joseph personal thank-you letters, expressing how much his presence, kindness, and encouragement meant to them during a vulnerable time in their lives. These handwritten notes speak volumes about the connection and trust he builds with patients; one even called him “a bright spot during a dark time.”
Joseph is also a trusted mentor and leader among our staff. He is someone we turn to for guidance, support, and perspective. He uplifts the morale of the team, mentors new hire nurses with patience and clarity, and consistently finds ways to enhance the unit's culture and safety. Joseph makes everyone around him feel supported and empowered.
It is clear to everyone who works with Joseph that he is not only a strong clinician but a deeply human one. He brings his heart to work every day—and that makes all the difference. We are all incredibly fortunate to work alongside him; we cannot think of anyone more deserving of this recognition.
Patient letters written and received about Joseph exemplify how regularly he goes the extra mile to make sure the children have a positive and personalized experience in an environment that, at times, can be very scary.
