My patient, who was on comfort care, passed away around midnight on our shift. The only family member around to hold my patient’s hand as he died was his spouse. After he passed, she was completely alone, and it was brought to our attention that she had no way to get home. Ms. Wu offered to take her home rather than trying to take a cab. Ms. Wu had the charge nurse take care of her patients. It was a very tender and kind gesture, and it was a reminder of the compassion it takes to be a nurse.
