After my wife took her final breath, Heather asked if she could have the honor of washing and caring for my wife at that time.
My wife was hospitalized seven times within a year. Heather initially provided wound care and directed wound management interventions early in my wife’s “journey,” and each time, my wife returned to Mercy. Heather was assertive and gave clear instructions-always with a solid rationale! Heather was always kind and helped my wife with a smile and a laugh. During my wife’s final hospitalization of 9 days, Heather regularly checked in on my wife and me. Heather came to my wife’s room on the morning of her passing and asked if it was ok just to sit with the two of us. What a kind, caring, supportive friend she was to both my wife and me.

After my wife took her final breath, Heather asked if she could have the honor of washing and caring for my wife at that time. I agreed, and Heather and the other nursing staff allowed me to participate in preparing and caring for my wife one last time. I will never forget, and I am eternally grateful for the support. I now consider Heather to be a true friend to me AND my wife. (I had a good cry while writing this! The tears were helpful.)

Note: This is Heather's 2nd DAISY Award!
