As a family who visits often and has a child who needs multiple procedures done, I can't tell you what a relief it is that we no longer have to stress about our son's recovery timeline during our visit.
My son has been a frequent flyer on the Dell Children's Surgery floor for the last few years. My son's situation is unique, and (over time) we have figured out that there are some exceptions that need to be made for him that need prior approval from the anesthesia team. Namely, it's the prompt removal of the IV as soon as my son starts to stir, waking up from anesthesia. This is typically not preferred by anyone involved with his recovery after surgery, as they like to keep IV access in case of airway failure (I think), but my son has a trach, so that issue is negated. When he wakes up from surgery, my son will get very upset, his oxygen saturations will drop, he'll fight to pull out the IV (often causing him pain / unnecessary bleeding), and overall cause a needless panic when it could all be avoided with effective communication. We have tried to express our desires on previous visits, but it wasn't always met with enthusiasm. Even though he was getting off shift during our most recent surgery in October 2024, Greg not only remembered my son from a previous visit but took the time to speak with us at length about what was best for my son while waking up after surgery. He remembered that we didn't have the best experience and that my son got very upset. He listened to our thoughts on strategy and then implemented the communication with H's recovery team that would ultimately result in the most stress-free/successful recovery room experience we've had to date! He spoke with the recovery charge nurse and those who are caring for my son directly. I believe he put into motion the conversations with the anesthesia team to get prior approval from the recovery nurses to remove the IV ASAP, which directly resulted in my son being able to relax instead of panicking. This sounds like such an obvious thing to do to us, but Greg took the time to explain why we needed things done differently than the status quo to all those involved in my son's surgical recovery. As a family who visits often and has a child who needs multiple procedures done, I can't tell you what a relief it is that we no longer have to stress about our son's recovery timeline during our visit. Like I mentioned before, our visit in October was the best surgery experience we've had to date due to Greg's assistance. And then this morning we arrived for another surgery, and saw Greg getting off the night shift. We were not assigned to him. Guess what he did? Took the time to make sure everyone involved in my son's surgery knew what was best for Hudson, then packed up his stuff to leave. Thanks again for your time and compassion, Greg. It means more than you know!
