Dana embodies the very essence of compassionate nursing. She doesn't just treat illnesses; she cares for people. She builds relationships, offers solace, and proactively seeks ways to improve her patients' quality of life.
It is with immense gratitude and profound respect that I nominate Dana Kaler, RN, for the prestigious DAISY Award. Dana provided exceptional and deeply compassionate care to my terminally ill father, J, during his hospitalization. Her kindness, attentiveness, and the genuine personal connection she forged with both my father and our entire family were a beacon of comfort during an incredibly difficult time.
The moment Dana began caring for Dad, it was evident that she was no ordinary nurse. She possessed an extraordinary ability to anticipate his needs, often before he even voiced them. Her clinical skills were matched by a remarkable willingness to go above and beyond her standard duties. It was not uncommon to see Dana assisting with tasks typically handled by housekeeping or nurse aides, always with a smile and a reassuring word. She did whatever was necessary to ensure Dad was comfortable and treated with the utmost dignity. This holistic approach to his care made a significant difference in his well-being and our peace of mind.
My father was fortunate enough to be discharged from the hospital. However, our journey took another difficult turn when he had to be readmitted approximately three weeks later. It was during this subsequent admission that Dana’s extraordinary character and dedication shone brightest. Although Dana was not assigned to care for Dad during his second stay, her compassion transcended formal assignments. She recognized my family members and me in the hospital cafeteria and immediately approached us, inquiring with genuine concern about how J was doing.
Later, to our immense surprise and gratitude, she appeared on the 3rd floor to personally check on him. It was during this unsolicited visit that her sharp clinical eye and proactive nature once again came to the forefront. She noticed that Dad had developed painful pressure ulcers from his extended time in bed, something that had unfortunately been overlooked. Without hesitation, Dana took the initiative to order an air mattress for him to help alleviate the pressure and prevent further discomfort. This single act, performed by a nurse not even assigned to his care, speaks volumes about her dedication to patient well-being and her unwavering commitment to the nursing profession. It was a moment of profound relief for us, knowing that someone as caring and competent as Dana was looking out for him, even from afar.

Dana’s actions provided not only physical comfort to my father but also immense emotional support to our family. In a time filled with uncertainty and sorrow, she was a consistent source of kindness and reassurance. She truly made a difference in our lives, and we will never forget the exceptional care she provided.
