Amaris's patient-centric approach to care demonstrates that while technology can assist, it can never replace the value of servant leadership and genuine human interaction.
Amaris was the board coordinator for Endoscopy when she received a call from a patient early in the day, who reported that he had traveled from Nevada the night before in preparation for an EGD/Colonoscopy. He had stayed at the My Space hotel across the street and arranged transportation to and from the hotel with a medical transport company. They called him that morning and cancelled his rides, as they had overbooked. He reported that he had prepped for the procedure and booked the hotel for the night prior and night after the procedure. This trip was costly and laborious, and he didn't think he had the means or funds to do this again. Amaris assured him transportation could be arranged to the hotel after his procedure and the patient was able and willing to walk the short distance to the hospital to check in for his procedure. The EGD was completed, but his prep was inadequate to perform the colonoscopy. Advocating for the patient, Amaris arranged with the provider and care staff to re-prep the patient, adding him to the schedule again at the end of the day. There was a mass discovered during the colonoscopy. There is no doubt her actions that day made a significant positive impact on the patient and his timely diagnosis. Had she chosen to merely follow the rules and tell the patient he would have to reschedule without a ride for his sedated procedure, he would have been cancelled and may not have had the means for rescheduling. Amaris's patient-centric approach to care demonstrates that while technology can assist, it can never replace the value of servant leadership and genuine human interaction. Her never-ending approach to doing what is best for the patient speaks volumes to the kindness and caring that she brings each and every day at work.
