It is having nurses like Emilyn that makes patients with such complex situations manageable instead of just dismissing them without a solution.
Emilyn practices the nursing ethical principles in her everyday practice. One situation Emilyn encountered was a special needs child who was going to be separated from her mother. The mother was going to be transferred to TMC, and there was no family or friend available to keep the child. The mother was distressed and refused the transfer because of the separation from the special needs child.
Emilyn used her autonomy skills to explain to the patient the importance of her treatment. She also went above and beyond, demonstrating her beneficence by talking to the mother about the plan for the child. Emilyn was working hard to ensure the child would go with the mother despite the challenging situation at hand. Emilyn escalated the issue and used all her resources, and assured the patient that they would not be separated.
Finally, they were able to transfer both the mother and the child to TMC with special accommodations for the child. Emilyn showed her nursing ethical principle of fidelity, which made the patient appreciate her efforts and the care they had given her child. Emilyn was also able to communicate with a family member who was to travel the following day and be with the child. It is having nurses like Emilyn that makes patients with such complex situations manageable instead of just dismissing them without a solution. This situation exemplifies most of the nursing ethics principles of nursing.
