She is a true role model who not only excels in her own responsibilities but also helps others grow and thrive. Her ability to balance leadership with kindness and understanding is truly remarkable, and I feel privileged to work alongside her.
Sandra has truly been an exceptional nurse and site manager who goes above and beyond to support her team and embody the trust's values. Sandra's dedication and empathy make her stand out, and I would like to share my experience to illustrate why she is so deserving of this recognition.
Sandra is one of the site managers who is approachable and always willing to listen to the concerns of her staff, even amidst her busy schedule. She consistently makes herself available to help, providing guidance and support when we need it most. I have countless examples of how she has positively impacted our team, but one recent incident stands out.
On a particularly challenging day, I found myself working a long shift and stepping into the role of coordinator for the first time. Our NIC was off sick, and we were severely short-staffed. To add to the pressure, A&E was extremely busy that day, and we had two complex discharges on our ward that required input from multiple teams. As someone new to coordinating, I was overwhelmed and unsure of how to handle the situation.
Sandra was my first point of contact as our ward manager was also on leave, and she immediately stepped in to help. She patiently addressed all my doubts and guided me through the process. At one point, we needed to flip a bay to create a flu bay, which required moving several patients to other wards. Sandra not only sent her transfer team to assist but also came to the ward herself. She took the time to speak directly with the patients, explaining the reasons for the move with compassion and ensuring they felt heard and respected.
At the end of that shift, Sandra called me aside and praised my efforts. Her encouraging words made a lasting impact, as she told me I had done well and that I was ready to step into the coordinator role. Her support and confidence in me boosted my morale and made me feel capable in a situation where I might have otherwise crumbled.
Another instance that showcases Sandra’s empathy and leadership occurred when we had an end-of-life patient in a side room. Due to the high volume of flu patients, there was a plan to move this patient out of the side room to accommodate others. When I raised my concerns about the impact this might have on the patient’s dignity and comfort, Sandra immediately reassessed the situation and adjusted her plans to ensure the patient could remain in the side room, where they passed away peacefully the next day. This act of compassion demonstrated Sandra's unwavering commitment to patient-centred care.
Having joined this trust from another, I can confidently say that I have never encountered a nurse and leader as empathetic and inspiring as Sandra. She is a true role model who not only excels in her own responsibilities but also helps others grow and thrive. Her ability to balance leadership with kindness and understanding is truly remarkable, and I feel privileged to work alongside her.
Sandra exemplifies the qualities of a DAISY Nurse through her dedication, empathy, and commitment to supporting both staff and patients. I am incredibly grateful for her guidance and encouragement, and I hope she receives the recognition she so richly deserves.
