As our manager, she creates an environment that is inclusive, safe, understanding, and respectful. She is passionate about her role as our manager and about the patient care we provide in the department.
I would like to nominate Emily Martin, CVOR Nurse Manager, for a DAISY Nurse Leader Award. She has worked in the Cardiovascular Operating Room since before I began my nursing career in 2017. She has always been an extremely hard-working nurse who is dedicated to best practice and teamwork. She was a circulating and scrub nurse in the CVOR and the primary unit coordinator before I personally left the department in 2020. Even before her role as nurse manager she was always dedicated to the team in the CVOR. I returned to KU in 2023 only after she took over as the nurse manager in the CVOR. Her new role in the department is one of the primary reasons I returned. I think she is an exceptional manager and I’m proud to work for her.
Emily has made so many improvements to the CVOR since she took over as manager. She continues to promote best practice and understands work/life balance which always motivates the team of nurses under her. Emily also encourages all her nursing staff to become certified through AORN and to pursue further education. Several newer nurses this year alone have passed the CNOR in our department. She is always supportive of any time dedicated to learning and improvement. I know that she has also volunteered her time towards organizations outside of the healthcare system that she is passionate about. Her great qualities as a nurse and leader continue to be seen outside of the healthcare system. She has worked within her local community outside of the healthcare system when she has volunteered with Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
Emily excels in all the award criteria for a DAISY Award. As our manager, she creates an environment that is inclusive, safe, understanding, and respectful. She is passionate about her role as our manager and about the patient care we provide in the department. She has been a team player from the beginning, and our team of nurses has always known that she supports all her staff. She is always willing to help anyone, and as a nurse under her, I feel safe talking to her about anything. Emily is respected by all in her leadership role in our department, and she always has such a great disposition. I think it can be so rare to work for a manager who you feel truly cares about you just as much as you care for your patients.
Emily has a reputation amongst all her staff as someone who is fair and ethical. She is great at listening to all concerns and suggestions for improvement from her staff. Her professionalism is always obvious whenever she addresses anyone at work, and I know she is motivated by the great work we do in our department. The 2024-25 U.S. News and World Report just recognized Cardiology, Heart and Vascular Surgery at KU again this year. We are #46 in the nation and this status can only be maintained when such a great team of healthcare professionals works together to maintain it. Emily plays one of many roles that helped achieve that status again. Emily is always a good role model for her team, and I think she exemplifies the characteristics of the best kind of nurse in our healthcare system.
