Lea was vital in coordinating the care for this patient to provide continuity of care and build a trusting relationship with the team.
Nurses like Lea Good are exceptional to work next to in your career, not only for her skill but also her experience and compassion for her patients. Recently, on 6 West, we cared for a patient, and Lea’s nursing skills and caring attitude were an example for everyone in the healthcare setting.
In June, a 22-year-old patient was admitted to 6 West for abdominal pain, but there was concern she may attempt to harm herself. The patient would not speak with the nurses or PCIA’s upon admission, and the team was unsure how to help the patient or keep her safe. The patient had recently lost her mother and did not feel safe at home. Additionally, she had signs of neglect, including not eating or taking care of her basic needs.
Lea was vital in coordinating the care for this patient to provide continuity of care and build a trusting relationship with the team. Lea reviewed the assignment and ensured the patient’s care consisted of a set group of nurses to help the patient feel comfortable and answer basic questions to help the medical team plan for her post-discharge care. Lea was scheduled to be on vacation during the patient’s stay and reviewed the plan of care and patient assignment with the leadership team to provide continuity of the plan.
The patient began to feel comfortable with Lea and shared some personal information, and that she enjoyed doing crafts and reading. Lea brought in craft supplies from home and books to keep the patient busy during her stay on the unit. Lea’s caring approach helped the patient develop trust with the team and allowed us to help with her basic needs.
The medical team determined the patient needed care outside of the home to help transition the patient safely. The greatest concern was placing the patient in a facility that would provide opportunities for the patient to grow socially and develop skills to function in society. The concern for the team was that placement in a nursing home may cause the patient to decline. Lea collaborated with Social Work and the Ethics Committee to ensure placement of the patient in a facility that would provide her with the best opportunities to feel safe and transition to independent life. Lea was recognized by multiple disciplines for her dedication and collaboration. Nursing combines skill and compassion, and Lea’s career exemplifies both.
This is Lea's Second Award!
