She stayed after her shift so my dad could spend some time with my mom.
My dad was admitted to PCM during his treatment for throat and lung cancer. His admission was partially due to malnutrition, as he hadn’t been able to swallow and was having difficulty with his new feeding tube. On Sunday, Janeigha was the charge nurse, and she made it clear that our concerns were her priority. She was able to set up the tube feedings herself later that day. We were so relieved and grateful.
Then, on Monday, while Dad was still in the hospital, it became evident that my mom was very ill. She was admitted to PCM on Monday night, and we soon learned that she was dying. She was admitted to the 8th floor, just one floor above my dad. Mom was barely conscious, and of course, my dad wanted to see her. This took a number of phone calls and would require one of the nurses from one floor to accompany my dad to mom’s floor and stay while Dad spent time with her. Of course, it was shift change, and all of the nurses were busy. Janeigha told me, “Just let me finish the report, and I’ll take him up there.” She stayed after her shift so my dad could spend some time with my mom. Janeigha acted like it was no big deal for her to stay after her shift, but I know 12-hour shifts are long, and everyone is eager to get home. I have the most precious pictures of my parents together on that visit.
It’s been a couple of months now; both of my parents came home that Thursday and my mom passed away at home early on Saturday morning. When I think back on those few intense and very sad and hard days, I continue to be grateful for Janeigha’s kindness and the comfort she provided
