Joe was extremely attentive to her and our family's needs and truly cared about our well-being. He kept us informed about what was going on, advocated to start therapies right away, and treated us as more than just a number or nameless patient.
My mom went in for a same-day surgery for her ear on a Friday. The staff in the CFAC was wonderful, and they decided to keep her overnight to monitor her oxygen levels. At this point, my mom was tired, but nothing else was concerning. We had been moved to a temporary room, then again to a room on the 11th floor in the new CFAC area. I left for the night around 11pm on Friday after her surgery, she was in good spirits and just tired from the day.
The next morning when I arrived, around 8:30am, I noticed a lot of people in the hall and then in my mom's room. It was overwhelming and scary to start the day, since when I left her the night before there was nothing too concerning and we thought she'd be going home first thing in the morning. This is when we first met our nurse, Joe. He had just met my mom and started his shift, and with less than an hour knowing her, he was able to recognize that something was wrong. He was observant and acted quickly to alert the neurology team immediately; my mom had a stroke. She was scared, and he was right there to assure her that it was going to be okay. As the day went on, Joe was extremely attentive to her and our family's needs and truly cared about our well-being. He kept us informed about what was going on, advocated to start therapies right away, and treated us as more than just a number or nameless patient. My mom expressed to him that she was so happy he was there; she felt so comfortable and safe. The next day, they had to move my mom again to a neurological floor, which happened when we weren't at the hospital. Joe called us right away, so we were aware. When we got to the hospital, Joe was finishing his shift, and he was able to leave early.
He could have easily just left, but he volunteered to walk my brother and I to the other side of the hospital to take us to her her new room. These are just a few of the things that I'm sharing, but there is so much more to say. Joe was thorough in talking to the specialists that came in, gave updates all day to our family and the other staff around him, and truly cared about providing the best environment for my mom. Because of Joe, my mom got the help she needed immediately and is now on her way to making a full recovery. He is a true example of everything you'd want and hope for in a nurse, and he deserves to be recognized.
