Sally is honest and transparent and sets very high standards for not only her team but for herself as well. One cannot help but want to perform better or accomplish more when you have this level of unconditional support.
Dr. Sally Walton epitomizes what it means to be a "Transformational Leader." The support, coaching, and mentorship that Sally provides are quintessential in helping to advance the culture of nursing excellence at UCMC. I have witnessed firsthand Sally's ability to lead through difficult situations and navigate our ever-changing healthcare environment, which is not an easy thing to do. Sally approaches each situation with a high degree of professionalism and respect for those around her, and I am honored to be part of her team. Some of the ways in which Sally contributes to a culture of excellence include:

Creating an environment where trust, compassion, mutual respect, and continued professional development are role-modeled and encouraged. Whether it be through supporting her team to attend various professional development opportunities or ensuring accountability for advancing degrees or achieving certification.

Sally provides guidance and support to help each team member reach their highest potential and does so in a way that is supportive, nurturing, and authentic.

Sally is a motivator! She shares her vision and enthusiasm for both department and organizational goals, which makes us all want to be the best UCMC team members that we can be. Sally is open to new ideas yet challenges others to consider alternative approaches or to think outside of the box. She has set the bar very high, but as the "true Leaders go first," thus she has also set the bar very high for herself. It is because of these expectations that she is viewed as a trusted and respected UCMC leader both by her team and by others who are fortunate enough to work with her.

Being a transformational leader does not come with a title. It is something that comes from within and Sally emulates this. She promotes and enhances the image of nursing within UCMC, which is evident by her team engagement, reputation within and outside of the organization as well as the numerous requests that she receives to serve as a mentor or student preceptor for others (which despite being so busy, Sally happily agrees to). I could not think of a more suited leader to oversee the Magnet process. Magnet is so much more than a "submission" every 4-years. It is about creating the infrastructure for nurses to be the best they can be, and that is what Sally strives for in everything that she does. She has "credibility," which is one of her most enduring qualities. Sally is honest and transparent and sets very high standards for not only her team but for herself as well. One cannot help but want to perform better or accomplish more when you have this level of unconditional support. They say that true leaders do not need to be the "expert" on everything (or try to pretend to be the expert). Strong leaders surround themselves with those who are the experts in their trade. Sally has done just that, and UCMC is a better place because of these traits. Sally is a true DAISY Nurse Leader.
