She taught clearly as she carried out each task- she patiently explained what and why she was doing the assessment with a gentle voice and a calming demeanor. Very thorough. She continued to gain my dad's trust.
A Healer's Touch
How exactly this suited Marina. She was my dad's night nurse on 10 east PCU. I was so devastated when Dad was admitted to ICU, so I flew to Michigan from Canada after knowing what had happened to Dad. But I felt relieved when Dad told me he was being taken care of perfectly by all the staff, particularly by Marina. She effectively built trust with my dad, so we requested Marina to be his nurse the next day.
When Marina came back at 7pm, she performed my dad's neurological assessment every 4 hours with tenderness, compassion, efficiency, and clarity. She taught clearly as she carried out each task- she patiently explained what and why she was doing the assessment with a gentle voice and a calming demeanor. Very thorough. She continued to gain my dad's trust. Every time she had to accompany Dad to the bathroom, she did it with gentleness and care. She made sure Dad was safe to walk to the bathroom every time.
This approach was very significant as my dad tends to be anxious and not always cooperative since he does not process cognitively what is going on. Marina's approach with him was so effective as she delivered the medications, took his blood pressure, and put his leads back many times. She directed her conversation toward him and conveyed kindness through her words and actions. I was impressed with how effectively she used her eye contact with him since her mask covered most of her face and with her eyeglasses on.
In today's medical world with short staffing, requiring long hours of work- Marina made us feel like dad was her only patient. She was not rushed. She was timely- if she said she would be back in 30 minutes she was- every time. We never had to wait.
Everyone on that unit was courteous, kind, very accommodating, helpful, attentive, and compassionate.
It was definitely a culture there.
Marina displayed RESPECT, CARE, COMPETENCE, and JOY in all the above-mentioned interactions with Dad. We will give her 5 out of 5 for each of these areas.
I hope that she understands how important she was and how effective she provided my dad's care to bring about a positive outcome, trust, and a fast recovery for dad. We will never forget.
Thank you all for my dad's care. May God continue to bless and keep you all safe and sound as you deliver a Healer’s Touch.
