The Adult Inpatient Division Professional Development team created and hosted an educational escape room. The escape room, titled “Hospital Haunts” provided the opportunity for teams of nurses to work through clues reviewing hospital policies and procedures related to NDNQI topics and involving initiatives that were a primary focus of patient care throughout the division this year. Nurses were introduced to the room and provided a hauntingly bad report on their patient who had been bitten by a zombie. Utilizing hints in the report and provided report sheet, nurses began solving clues that assisted in fixing the errors in patient care.

Themes of clues included CAUTI, CLABSI, Falls, CDiff, and HAPI prevention. Nurses worked together to keep the patients safe from harm and save them from a zombie infection. Groups of up to 6 nurses utilized teamwork, effective communication, safety knowledge, and resource management to successfully complete the escape room. In total, 278 team members from the Adult Inpatient Division and ISS successfully completed the escape room.

98.8% of participants reported that completing the escape room helped to solidify concepts and initiatives they have been completing this year in their units. After the activity, there was a 200% increase in team members who feel “very confident” in applying interventions related to NDNQI initiatives compared to prior to the activity.
