It is because of Taylor's sharp clinical knowledge and skills and her dedication to patient safety and advocacy that she felt inclined to speak up to keep this patient safe.
I was Taylor's clinical instructor for 4th semester clinical at Renown South Meadows that just ended. On one of the clinical shifts, Taylor witnessed her resource Nurse about to hang a bag of maintenance IV fluids for a patient using the same tubing that a Heparin drip had just been running through. The tubing still had Heparin in it.
Taylor realized this could result in the patient receiving a bolus of Heparin, so she offered to get the Nurse a new set of tubing for the IV fluids. The Nurse told her it wasn't necessary as she didn't want to have to re-prime the new tubing and re-program the pump. Taylor then escalated her concerns for the patient's safety by saying to the Nurse that if the tubing didn't get changed, the patient could get a bolus of Heparin. At this point, the Nurse agreed to go get new tubing and change it out.
As a Nursing student, it's difficult to question a Nurse with more experience than oneself. It is because of Taylor's sharp clinical knowledge and skills and her dedication to patient safety and advocacy that she felt inclined to speak up to keep this patient safe. Her positive patient impact should be commended and recognized.
