Not only is Sue always teaching, but she is also always learning. She is truly dedicated to lifelong learning, which is what makes her a great nurse and an even better educator.
Nurse Educators play a vital role in shaping the future of nursing. A great nurse educator shows passion and drive to make a difference. They motivate and inspire their learners to provide compassionate, safe, and effective patient care. They act as role models for all nurses with whom they come in contact.
Susan Gallucci is not only an amazing representation of the above qualities, but the personification of our AHS shared values and an outstanding representation of the Overlook way. She truly makes everyone feel welcomed in OUR house and whenever I hear the TV Show Cheers theme song, I always think of Sue, because she really does know everybody’s name…..and they know hers too!
When a new employee walks through the door, anxious and confused, and not sure what their new job is going to entail, Susan has a way of easing their anxieties and making them feel right at home. Her calming demeanor assures these team members that everything is going to be all right. New employees are bombarded with a lot of information during their first week of orientation, but Susan has this way of not making it seem so overwhelming. She is always coming up with fun acronyms and ways to help the important information stick! She is an innovator at heart and is always thinking of ways to improve the learning experience for our team members.
One of her (many) favorite classes to teach is the Basic Dysrhythmia course. Each dysrhythmia class is taught with passion and a deep understanding of the why behind everything that is being taught. This information is vital to their roles, and she ensures that each and every student has the knowledge they need to be successful in their role and safely care for their patients. She takes this role very seriously, and when she notices someone struggling to understand the content, she offers thorough 1:1 tutoring sessions. I often hear her working with these team members during these sessions and the way she works with them to get the “light bulb” to turn on is truly amazing to hear. She is extremely devoted to developing strong nurses and creating a culture of safety. Even team members at other AHS sites request to come to Sue’s class because the rumors are true; she is just THAT amazing!
Her presentation skills are unmatched. She was recently asked by our President to be recorded for her presentation about the history of the Professional Practice Model. The way she speaks is so engaging and her storytelling skills are extraordinary! It is evident that she has a passion for Shared Governance as well as its history at OMC. She currently serves as the advisor for the OMC Professional Development Council and makes herself available as a mentor to all on the council.
Her Passion for quality initiatives and the HRO principles are demonstrated through her work on the phlebotomy course and the blood culture workgroup. She is dedicated to quality and safety and is currently working on an EBP project to improve blood culture, low volume, and contamination.
Not only is Sue always teaching, but she is also always learning. She is truly dedicated to lifelong learning, which is what makes her a great nurse and an even better educator. She is always keeping up with the latest literature and incorporating it into her courses. She also attends and even presents at conferences hosted by reputable nursing professional organizations across the country. She is quite the role model for all of us!
Lastly, I would be remiss if I did not mention how enthusiastic she is about our Clinical Ladder program, PACT. She is the biggest cheerleader for everyone achieving PACT and offers many 1:1 counseling sessions to those who need guidance on how to get involved and be successful in the program. She looks at every binder, and when leading the lively and very well-attended celebration ceremony, she can remember almost all of the amazing projects our team members put together and highlights them at the ceremony.
We are all so lucky to have Sue here cheering on our nurses to get involved and be strong, successful role models for generations to come!
