Sharyn planned and coordinated several opportunities for ED providers and ED staff to discuss topics of critical interest in the ED.
This educator is a lifelong learner and teacher. Sharyn has experience in NICU, ED, and ED follow-up. She has precepted new staff, mentored others, and served in leadership roles such as charge nurse.
As an educator in the ED, she partnered with UTMC to provide Trauma courses to accommodate a backlog of people needing certification. She vetted and implemented a new process for orienting nurses to triage that aligns with the Emergency Nurses’ Association ESI standards. Additionally, she spearheaded a coordinator role that has allowed our departmental skills day to flow with far less confusion.
Two of her educational achievements stand out. She has been vital in providing regular simulation events with Dr. T. These RCDP sessions (the brainchild of Dr. T) lead staff to examine and practice the process of resuscitation. Its non-linear approach teaches flexibility and problem-solving. We implemented these a year ago, and staff love them.
The second achievement is the ED summer school. Sharyn planned and coordinated several opportunities for ED providers and ED staff to discuss topics of critical interest in the ED. Topics included sepsis, DKA, seizures, autism, ingestions, and more. Additionally, she records the event and will send the link to all staff. This educator is active in institutional education through skills days, education round table, and work on various committees (sepsis task force, code blue, and others). She keeps a flexible schedule that assists her in following up with all shifts. Her office is a place where staff can decompress. She contributes to overall morale by coordinating staff celebrations, both inside and outside work. She randomly provides meals and other homemade goodies from her own kitchen. Oh, and she is an excellent cook. I believe this educator has been a tremendous asset to the ED. I am pleased to recognize her achievements so far and excited to see what she accomplishes in the future.
