Sandi is more than just a manager; she is a steadfast advocate, a compassionate guide, and a protector of dignity at life’s most fragile moments
In the spirit of Jean Watson’s Caritas Processes, which honor human dignity, foster deep compassion, and bear witness to life’s most vulnerable moments, Sandi consistently embodies what it means to lead with both heart and excellence. Her unwavering advocacy for patients and families facing unimaginable circumstances has touched countless lives within our ICU.

One remarkable example involves a patient with a poor prognosis whose family was lost, heartbroken, yet steadfast in their belief that it wasn’t their mother’s time to leave. Sandi stepped forward as a fierce advocate, navigating complex clinical conversations to ensure the team honored the family’s wishes and supporting them tirelessly through every decision point. Despite many expectations, this patient ultimately left the hospital, not to a facility or hospice, but home, proud and determined, in her wheelchair, surrounded by her family. Sandi’s compassion, persistence, and advocacy made that homecoming possible.

In another instance, a young man faced an unexpected, life-changing event and spent an entire year in Sandi’s unit. She became a reliable guide for his parents throughout their long and challenging journey, assisting them in coping, planning, and navigating numerous steps ahead. Under her leadership, the patient was discharged after this lengthy stay without any hospital-acquired infections or wound complications, demonstrating the culture of detailed, compassionate care that Sandi fosters within her team.

Most recently, Sandi cared for a young mother with a devastating prognosis. The family was distraught, and her two young children were struggling to process what was happening. Sandi thoughtfully coordinated a special visit for the children to spend meaningful time with their mom. She ensured her staff communicated transparently and compassionately, standing by the family’s side each time difficult updates had to be delivered. Recognizing their spiritual needs, she arranged multiple visits from a priest, wrapping this family in both medical and emotional support during their darkest hours.

Beyond her patient and family advocacy, Sandi is recognized among her colleagues as a true “go-to” leader, the one people turn to when situations are complex, emotions run high, or guidance is needed. She is a plethora of support, offering clinical expertise, emotional steadiness, and an unwavering willingness to help. Whether it’s mentoring newer leaders, coaching bedside staff through complex cases, or simply being that calm voice of reason in a crisis, Sandi is trusted and respected by those who work alongside her. Her peers consistently describe her as dependable, collaborative, and someone who always “shows up” for the team.

Across these moments, Sandi demonstrates exceptional Caritas leadership by not only managing care but also creating a compassionate environment where patients and families feel seen, heard, and genuinely supported. She exemplifies what it means to combine clinical excellence with human kindness.

Sandi is more than just a manager; she is a steadfast advocate, a compassionate guide, and a protector of dignity at life’s most fragile moments. Her impact is evident in every patient story, every grateful family, and every staff member who follows her lead.
