Yesterday, at 07:18 in the morning, a community gym member experienced a full cardiac arrest while on the treadmill.
Within 15 seconds, 3 nurses were at his side, followed by an additional RN and 3 exercise physiologists. They immediately initiated chest compressions and attached the AED, while also providing rescue breaths with an ambu bag.
After approximately 2 minutes of compressions, the patient began to arouse. After a few seconds, the patient lost consciousness, pulses, and turned blue. CPR was again initiated, after another 2 minutes, the patient started to come to again and remained conscious. EMS (fire and paramedic) arrived 8 minutes after the patient initially collapsed. Patient was transported, A&O, to the ED where he coded again and emergently went to Cath Lab and had placement of a temporary transvenous pacemaker and transferred to ICU. Last night, the patient received a permanent pacemaker, has remained stable, and should be stepped down to the floor today.
Every single second of this event was captured on our security footage and what appears is an absolute, seamless, display of teamwork and heroism.
This patient (community member) had actually gone through our cardiac rehab program a couple years ago and is beloved by all staff. We are so incredibly grateful for this outcome.
