Olivia’s care went beyond the physical treatment of my mother; she supported us emotionally, made us feel seen and heard, and treated my mom with the dignity she deserved.
When my mother was admitted to the 7th-floor oncology at Sanford Broadway, our family embarked on a journey we never imagined we’d face. She had been transferred from the ICU, and I visited her expecting to see her disoriented and confused significant had occurred earlier that day. Coming from the medical field, I am no stranger to the sights and sounds of a hospital. Yet, nothing could prepare me for the overwhelming fear and helplessness I felt seeing my mother in that state. Olivia, who was caring for my mom, saw the concern and confusion on my face as I entered the room. I was stressed, worried, and, admittedly, not in the best state of mind.
Despite my barrage of questions, Olivia responded with patience, understanding, and a level of detail that reassured me. She explained everything that had happened, providing the clarity and support I desperately needed at that moment. Later, an oncologist came into the room, and he began discussing my mother’s condition. I was overwhelmed, struggling to process the rapid decline in my mother’s health and the harshness of the news. But Olivia was there, steadfast and compassionate. She comforted my stepdad and me, providing the empathy and care that we so desperately needed in that moment. Her presence made all the difference. After my mother had returned from yet another round in the ICU, Olivia continued to show extraordinary compassion.
We talked about the three weeks my mom had spent in the hospital, and Olivia took the time to listen to her story and ours as her family. She showed genuine interest and empathy, providing much-needed consolation during what has been the hardest time in my life. Olivia’s care went beyond the physical treatment of my mother; she supported us emotionally, made us feel seen and heard, and treated my mom with the dignity she deserved. She made my mother’s final days more comfortable, and she helped us navigate the most challenging experience of our lives with grace and compassion. She truly embodies the spirit of nursing and has made a profound impact on our family during the most difficult time in our lives.
