Natan’s enthusiasm radiates in everything he does. His passion for nursing and commitment to the highest standards of care serve as a constant motivation for all of us.
Natan Santacruz is practically a celebrity on the 10th floor. You can easily recognize him by his button-down shirt, his goggles, big smile, and his ready-to-help attitude as soon as he arrives. He is known, respected, and loved by everyone. Before becoming our Patient Care Director (PCD), Natan was a nurse in 10 South for about four years. During that time, he shone brightly at the bedside, creating meaningful relationships with everyone around him. His achievements as a nurse truly caught the eye of many, and soon after he was encouraged to take a leadership position in the very unit he worked for. We are fortunate enough to call him our PCD.

Natan’s doors are always open- literally and figuratively. Inclusivity is at the heart of Natan’s leadership style. He fosters an environment where every team member feels valued and heard. He encourages us to think about our mistakes as opportunities to flourish and grow; and our disappointments as a bridge to success.

Natan is also a driving force behind some major organizational changes. Through his innovative approaches and visionary thinking, he has either spearheaded or supported numerous initiatives that have not only improved patient care but also enhanced the overall work environment for the entire team. His ability to see opportunities for improvement where others see challenges is truly inspiring. He not only encourages people to “think outside the box,” but he often reimagines the lines of the box. He turns our seemingly wild ideas into concrete realities. For example, he gave the utmost support to two nurses on the unit that wanted to increase the usage of midlines, in an attempt to decrease central line associated blood stream infections. Natan coordinated meetings, disseminated information and has also been a strong advocate for the usage of midlines when it is a viable option for the patient. Now, midline usage has increased much more, and CLABSI’s are reduced. This is the power of a great leader.

When faced with challenges, he approaches them with a calm and methodical mindset, quickly identifying the root cause and implementing effective solutions. His problem-solving skills have been instrumental in navigating our team through difficult situations, always with a focus on the best outcomes for our patients and staff. Even during his days off, Natan is attentive to our needs. One time, after finding out that there was a citywide Microsoft crash, Natan showed up to work at 3 am to make sure we were okay. We often joke that he needs to forget about us a little more.

Natan’s enthusiasm radiates in everything he does. His passion for nursing and commitment to the highest standards of care serve as a constant motivation for all of us. Many patients have reported ways that they have been personally inspired by Natan, such as when he set up the lounge for an end-of-life patient to see his children whom he had not seen in two months. He gave them a stethoscope and coloring sheets so that it was easier for the patient to explain his condition to his children.

Natan also assisted a patient who had recently immigrated to the US. Unfortunately, after contracting a severe urinary infection, she had to travel through unsanitary and unsafe conditions through four Latin American countries with a urinary foley. She came into the US with a foley and very little clothing. Natan and another kind nurse took it upon themselves to buy the patient a prepaid cell phone. This was essential because, without it, she would have a hard time making necessary medical appointments. This was done because Natan believes extensively in providing holistic care that considers the social determinants of health.

Natan wholeheartedly exemplifies the qualities of a truly outstanding nurse leader. His leadership has been a catalyst for positive change, fostering a culture of innovation, inclusivity, and collaboration. It would be a great honor on behalf of all of 10 South for him to be considered for this award.
