Her therapeutic communication helped the patient feel at ease, and soon they began to engage with her. By the time she explained the next steps in their care, they looked noticeably more relaxed and trusting of the process.
Mikaela was my preceptor during my clinical rotations in the emergency department, and she consistently went above and beyond to provide exceptional care while mentoring me. One situation that stands out involved a patient who came in with severe abdominal pain. The patient was visibly distressed and initially reluctant to answer questions, clearly overwhelmed by their discomfort and anxiety.
Mikaela approached the patient with such calm professionalism and empathy that it was inspiring to watch. She knelt down to the patient’s level, introduced herself, and gently reassured them that they were in good hands. She asked open-ended questions and gave the patient the time and space to express their concerns. What made the experience even more impactful for me as a student was how Mikaela involved me. She explained what she was doing as she provided care, from her choice of words to her clinical decisions, so I could understand the rationale behind her actions. Then, she guided me through administering IV medication, ensuring I felt confident and competent while prioritizing the patient’s comfort and safety. She balanced teaching me with ensuring the patient’s needs were met seamlessly.
Mikaela’s dedication to her patients and her students is unparalleled. She not only provided exceptional care to this patient but also taught me the importance of empathy, patience, and precision in nursing practice. Her ability to manage high-pressure situations while maintaining compassion and professionalism is truly extraordinary. She exemplifies what it means to be an outstanding nurse, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have learned from her.
