Shellie feels their sadness as her own and celebrates their victories as if they were her own children. This empathy is not just a part of her job; it is who she is.
Shellie Mackereth is, without question, the most extraordinary nurse I have ever had the privilege to work alongside. For over a decade, I’ve witnessed firsthand the compassion, collaboration, and clinical excellence she brings to her role, and I’ve waited until now to share her story, wanting to ensure this recognition wouldn’t alter our professional relationship. As I’ve transitioned out of my clinical practice, I now have the opportunity to formally showcase the exceptional care Shellie provides to every patient she serves.
Every patient who encounters Shellie quickly learns that she is not just their nurse; she treats them as if they are family. It’s rare to hear a complaint from her about the demands of patient care, and in over ten years, I’ve never once heard her express frustration or dissatisfaction. Instead, she constantly goes above and beyond, learning the little details that make each child and family unique, ensuring that their needs are met in the most personalized way possible. Shellie feels their sadness as her own and celebrates their victories as if they were her own children. This empathy is not just a part of her job; it is who she is.
Her clinical instincts are unmatched. When she came to find me, I knew something was seriously wrong—she has a keen ability to recognize acute needs and act on them swiftly and decisively. Throughout my career, Shellie became an extension of the care team for the families we served. Many families would specifically ask for her, expressing disappointment if she wasn’t available. She builds relationships with families that go beyond the clinic visit, and her level of care is personal and deeply meaningful to them. It was clear that Shellie was someone they trusted, not just as a nurse, but as a person who truly cared for their well-being.
Shellie’s commitment to fairness and equality is unwavering. Despite the political, socioeconomic, and cultural differences that we encountered from room to room, I never saw her treat anyone differently. She helped every patient with the same level of respect and dedication, no matter their background. If a patient needed to be seen, she would find a way to make it happen, without hesitation or complaint, because doing what was right for the patient was always her priority.
Shellie is also an exceptional communicator and educator, particularly when it comes to addressing questions and concerns from patients and their families. Whether the issue is about vaccination schedules, the potential side effects of a treatment, or helping parents understand the importance of early intervention, Shellie has a remarkable ability to listen deeply to patient concerns, clarify their questions, and provide thorough, understandable answers. Her knowledge and confidence help families feel reassured and supported, allowing them to make informed decisions about their health and care.
Her attunement to even the smallest details in her patients’ lives is another hallmark of her extraordinary care. Shellie doesn’t just see patients as a list of symptoms or conditions; she sees them as individuals with unique needs. One of the most striking examples of this occurred with a post-partum mother who was feeling unwell. Shellie was the first to notice that something wasn’t right and, through careful questioning and observation, realized that the mother had a spinal leak. This insight was critical, as the mother had been struggling for days, not realizing the severity of her condition. Shellie didn’t hesitate to act—she physically ensured the mother got to the OB clinic to receive the specialized care she needed, offering not only medical support but also emotional comfort in a moment of uncertainty.
One example that stands out in my mind is an incident that occurred on a particularly terrible day when someone was shot and dropped at our clinic’s front doors. Without a moment’s hesitation, Shellie ran to the individual’s side, providing critical care until EMS arrived. She acted with extraordinary courage, fully aware of the potential danger to herself, but her focus was on helping the patient in that moment, no matter the risk.
Shellie exemplifies everything the DAISY Award stands for: compassion, clinical excellence, teamwork, and above all, a deep, genuine commitment to the people she serves. She does all of this with a humility that makes her even more remarkable. No one is more deserving of this recognition than Shellie Mackereth.
