Mallory demonstrated unwavering professionalism, compassion, and expertise that left a lasting impact on both my family and me.
Last week, I received amazing news: my sister in law was in labor with my first nephew. That alone was a blessing, but her allowing me as one of her support people was even better. As an RN here at NYU Langone Mineola, I know the care the nurses provide, but when I was introduced to Mallory Bergman, I felt a sense of peace take over the room. From the moment Mallory started her shift at 7 pm until the moment they rolled my sister in law out of the OR, I never felt worried. She balanced clinical excellence while also providing professionalism and empathy throughout.

My sister in law Jess, as an RN herself, had created a birth plan she wanted to try and stick to. Part of my job was to help advocate and assist her in making difficult decisions that might arise, as labor is always changing. The second Mallory noticed there was a sense of fear she provided an explanation, if she saw a concerned look she asked "what's the hesitation? Will this make you more comfortable instead?, let's try it". I never felt like I had to speak up for her because Mallory was there, fully present with her calm, compassionate voice. She took the time to educate and explain when and why she was doing what she was doing, allowing everyone to feel acknowledged and heard. Allowing her expertise in her field shine.

Jess knew taking the epidural would keep her out of bed time, but Mallory did not let that hinder her movement; she whipped out every trick in the book. For hours, every 15 minutes was a different position; if it didn't work, we tried something else. Her ability to mold and collaborate on what worked specifically for Jess was phenomenal. She knew what was needed, when it was needed, and within seconds if it was not the best decision. She brought a sense of strength, and her clinical skill set in this field far surpasses what I could have ever dreamed of in a nurse for my own family.

When we enter a room as a loved one and not an RN, it's hard to settle into a different role, but Mallory allowed me to do that. I settled and enjoyed being a solid support for my family, and watched the amazing miracle of new life. She truly embodies all the qualities for the DAISY Award, and any patient would be lucky to have her.

This is from the patient herself:

During one of the most vulnerable and significant experiences of my life, Mallory exemplified what it truly means to be an exceptional nurse. After a long 48 hours of labor—nine of which she was my dedicated nurse—Mallory demonstrated unwavering professionalism, compassion, and expertise that left a lasting impact on both my family and me.

As a nurse myself, transitioning from caregiver to patient was a humbling and emotional experience. When my original birth plan unexpectedly changed, I was filled with fear and uncertainty. Mallory immediately recognized my anxiety and provided reassurance through her calm, confident presence. She treated me not only as a patient but as a person, acknowledging and validating every emotion I experienced.

One of my greatest concerns was the loss of mobility after receiving an epidural. Mallory listened intently to this fear and went above and beyond to ensure I remained as comfortable and active as possible. She skillfully guided me through a variety of positions throughout the final stages of labor, demonstrating both creativity and clinical expertise. Her dedication to maintaining movement and progress during labor was remarkable, and she remained at my side, never leaving for more than a few minutes.

From the moment she assumed my care at 7 pm until I was taken to the operating room, Mallory was my steadfast advocate. She anticipated my needs, communicated clearly, and created an environment where I felt safe, supported, and empowered. Her ability to balance clinical excellence with compassionate, patient-centered care was extraordinary.

What could have been an overwhelming and frightening experience instead became a profoundly positive and empowering memory, thanks to Mallory. Her professionalism, skill, and genuine empathy embody the very essence of the nursing profession. I am endlessly indebted to her for transforming the most challenging day of my life into one marked by trust, dignity, and hope.

Mallory is a true example of nursing at its finest.
