It's clear that she sees advocacy as a crucial part of her role, and she carries it out with courage and professionalism
I am honored to nominate Madison, as she is the epitome of a DAISY Nurse. She consistently checks in, thoroughly explains the plan of care, provides compassionate care, and makes sure her patients are emotionally supported. She consistently displays clinical excellence and tireless advocacy for her patients. From the very first days at Mercy, it was clear that Madison is not just a nurse, she is a healer in every sense of the word.
What sets her apart is the emotional connection she builds with her patients. She doesn't just perform tasks - she truly sees the person in the bed. For example, we have a patient on 5 North who has been on our unit for many months. To make him feel more at home, she decorated his wheelchair with lights for the Christmas season. It was evident that it made this patient feel more at home, as when the batteries for the lights went out, he was adamant about having them replaced so that he could show off his "bling" that Madison got for him.
Madison's work ethic is also second to none - she's quick to help with any patient on the unit, whether she's assigned to them or not. She is often seen being a mentor on the unit with precepting young and experienced nurses alike. While serving as a charge nurse, she's quick to help her fellow teammates with med-passes, questions about job roles, as well as clinical documentation necessary with the charge nurse role. On top of this, Madison is often seen educating her patients on complications of their condition, as well as helpful tips to manage said condition, ensuring both the patient and their family members understand what to expect. She makes sure her patients are informed, prepared, and supported every step of the way. What truly leaves a lasting impression is her willingness to advocate fiercely for her patients. When there are questions or concerns about the treatment plan, Madison doesn't hesitate to speak directly with the physicians on their behalf. She ensures their symptoms aren't dismissed, their concerns are addressed, and that her patients' voice is heard in every discussion. It's clear that she sees advocacy as a crucial part of her role, and she carries it out with courage and professionalism.
For another example, there was a time when a patient on our unit was admitted with pancreatitis. Over the course of her shift, she noticed an acute change in the patient's presentation, with a large discoloration forming over the patient's abdomen. She advocated for this patient, informing the MD. The MD was hesitant to order imaging, as the patient's vital signs remained stable. Because Madison has such a strong relationship with her patients, she could tell something was awry. She utilized Atrium Health's commitment to safety by further requesting clinical investigation. Eventually, with her persistence, the MD ordered the imaging that found an acute change in the patient that otherwise would've gone unnoticed. Through Madison's courage, the patient avoided further complications and got the patient on a path to a healthy state. (A great catch!)
She embodies what the DAISY Award is all about: a commitment to the whole patient - not just their illness, but their emotional, spiritual, and physical wellbeing. We are grateful to have her as a teammate on 5North, and I can't imagine a more deserving recipient of this honor.
