We excel because Lyndsey not only expects excellence but inspires it.
There are many reasons why Lyndsey is an exceptional leader and truly worthy of receiving the DAISY Award: she is compassionate, hardworking, and encouraging. Lyndsey’s compassion extends beyond the patients on our floor; as a leader, she consistently demonstrates deep care and consideration for her staff. It’s not uncommon to find her in the hallways or nurses' station, engaging with team members about their families, school, work, personal struggles, pets—you name it. Lyndsey doesn’t view her staff as numbers. Through her actions, she shows that each team member is valued and cared for.
Recently, I had the privilege of spending some time in the office and witnessed firsthand how Lyndsey takes time to remember personal details about her team. Whether she’s calling staff to discuss shift coverage or other unit requirements, she always asks, “How’s your mom doing?” “Is your back feeling better?” “How are your kids?” These aren’t rehearsed lines—they are genuine questions, showing that Lyndsey truly knows and cares about her staff as individuals. Keep in mind, we have over 100 staff members in our unit alone. This compassion extends beyond our unit.
One weekend, when she was on-call for the hospital, she personally delivered doughnuts to each unit while rounding. Lyndsey is always thinking of bedside staff and goes above and beyond to extend thoughtfulness and intentionality. When she asks, “Do you need anything?” you can count on her to deliver. She is trustworthy and follows through with action.
I take great pride in working on the 4th floor at Wesley Long, much of which stems from Lyndsey's leadership. Our unit has consistently led the system in many metrics and initiatives, and this success is directly tied to Lyndsey’s exceptional leadership. She ensures that every process and policy is structured so our unit runs like a well-oiled machine.
Lyndsey is often found in the hallways, leading by example, communicating expectations, and making sure our unit stays on track—whether it's bedside rounds, ensuring equipment is out of hallways, or safeguarding patient privacy. She is well-respected and maintains strong relationships with her staff, managing with a style that is not overbearing but nurturing.
We excel because Lyndsey not only expects excellence but inspires it. She is also an outstanding communicator—staff on our unit are always well-informed. Whether through huddles, emails, texts, or flyers, Lyndsey ensures her team is up-to-date on hospital news, policies, and procedures. Lyndsey is always looking for ways to improve.
During staff meetings, she constantly asks, “What are we as your leaders doing well, and what can we work on?” This speaks volumes about her willingness to receive open feedback and make herself better—a trait of a great leader. Additionally, Lyndsey isn't afraid to apologize when she's wrong. Once, after a brief exchange on a busy day, Lyndsey followed up with me to apologize for being short in her response. She took the time to make sure I knew my thoughts and questions were valid. This level of introspection and willingness to take action is rare and exemplifies her leadership qualities.
Recently, I spoke with the Director of the Professional Nurse Advancement Program, who noted that our 4th floor team has one of the highest numbers of RN3 and RN4 nurses. I believe this is a direct reflection of Lyndsey’s encouragement. She fosters a culture that supports and inspires professional growth. For instance, I had an idea to implement a system to help with policy compliance. Lyndsey not only supported the idea but helped bring it to fruition. The idea was successful! She encouraged me to write an abstract and submit it to a Nursing Excellence Showcase, where it won an award. Lyndsey then encouraged me to submit the project to a state-wide nursing leadership conference, where it was selected.
What started as a small idea has now become a system-wide initiative, with the potential to impact hospitals across the state. This success wouldn’t have been possible without Lyndsey’s belief in her staff and her commitment to fostering growth. She has an incredible ability to identify greatness in others and create an environment where that potential can flourish. Simply put, Lyndsey is an amazing leader.
