My mother is a new Hospice patient. She became very agitated and was in a lot of pain, but due to her agitation, would not take her pain medication for any of the family. She was restless and requested to move from the bedroom to the bathroom to the living room. She felt the constant need to urinate as well. Luke came out to the house, first listened to our concerns, and made sure he had the facts about what was occurring with my mother. He then got down to her eye level and spoke to her patiently until she calmed down.
Once calm, she listened to Luke and took the morphine and the anxiety medication that we could not get her to take with her pain level being so high. After which, he patiently walked with her when she was ready back to the bedroom, got her settled, and was able to insert a cath, get a urine sample, and correspond with the physician. He sent in an RX for my mom’s UTI, and then, despite spending over an hour patiently caring for my mother, he further went above and beyond by making sure my family members and I all knew what was going on.
My parents have been married for over 60 years, and my father has dementia. Luke could see that he was struggling and took the time to speak with him as well to help calm him down and to reassure him that my mom is being cared for. This meant a lot to my siblings and me. After speaking with Luke, we were able to get my dad to settle down in a chair next to my mom, and my mom was able to rest comfortably and sleep. His care, patience, and attention to detail, along with his sense of humor when my mom tried to set him up with any unmarried woman she knew, were greatly appreciated.
This is a very difficult time for my family, and he stepped right in with confidence and was able to care for our family as a whole with a kindness he did not have to display. I work in the health care industry and can honestly say that his care as a hospice nurse in the wee hours of the morning went above and beyond. He is truly an asset to OSF.
