It did not take long for the team to see a leader who genuinely cared about them and wanted to make the unit better.
When this leader transferred into an ANM role they found a unit struggling with high turnover, high vacancy, and low morale. Despite this, she came in with a positive attitude and the determination to get to know this team and have an impact. It did not take long for the team to see a leader who genuinely cared about them and wanted to make the unit better. She spent much time just doing consistent team members rounds and it did not take too long for this team to start feeling like they were being listened to. It took some time, but they began to trust her and started turning to her for leadership and guidance. At the time this unit had the lowest patient experience scores and the lowest team member engagement scores in the building. There was some progress made on outcomes but in May 2024 when the Nurse Manager resigned this team overwhelmingly threw their support behind making this ANM their new Nurse Manager. Since then, it feels like a miracle happened. The overall engagement score improved by 33.6%. The favorability for My leader treats people with respect went from 38.1% to 90.2% and My leaders cares about me as at person went from 19% to 82.9%. Patient experience went from 68.3% top box which was 37th percentile last year to 83.3% YTD so far this year which is top decile performance! Quality outcomes for Falls and HAIs have improved and she is leading this team in several QI projects improving patient outcomes for hypoglycemia, respiratory failure patients and sepsis. This leader has had a huge impact on new hire turnover which is much better than goal and the unit has 0 RN vacancies. Another really important change has been in relationships with other departments and units. She has helped this team feel part of a whole and not out on an island by themselves. They are now working collaboratively with other departments and unit for the benefit of our patients. This a humble leader who refuses to take credit for all the work that has been done and graciously gives all the credit to the team and I am very proud to work with her and show her accomplishments to this committee because she truly is a transformational leader and deserves this award.
