ll of his gestures and interactions in handling this situation exemplified his commitment to providing patient-centered quality care.
I would like to bring to your attention the exemplary example that Mr. Johnson sets in the OR at the control station as a Nurse Leader. I was witness to an incident regarding a consent for an OR procedure, whereby the operative consent was noted to be in a language other than the patient’s native language. Mr. Johnson asked the medical team for proper consent of the patient by using a Russian consent form in order that the patient could read and understand, in her native language, the risks, benefits, and alternatives of the procedure before agreeing to the procedure. This request caused some arguing and scuttlebutt amongst the medical service caring for the patient, resulting in resistance to following this directive, which caused not only a delay of the OR case, but further patient anxiety. Mr. Johnson calmly and effectively mediated and resolved this active dispute in a manner that everyone could learn from. He did this by redirecting the parties involved to an area away from the patient in order to have a proper discussion regarding rules that allow for proper care of the patient.
Mr. Johnson is an example of how we can all better understand our patients’ needs. As he advocated for the patient, not only did he put the patient at ease, but allowed her to understand the plan of care while having her problems and concerns addressed appropriately, and in her native language. I witnessed Mr. Johnson’s extraordinary care, patience, and calmness that was above and beyond in order to lessen the patient’s fear and anxiety on the day of her surgery. All of his gestures and interactions in handling this situation exemplified his commitment to providing patient-centered quality care. This one example is a testament to Mr. Johnson’s leadership and compassion for patients, that Mr. Johnson demonstrates on a daily basis as he runs the control station in the OR. If I should ever need surgery, please assign Mr. Johnson as my primary nurse for his outstanding nursing care that he provides every single day.
