Most notably, she has woven cultural humility and health equity into every facet of her nursing practice, embodying values that many healthcare professionals spend their entire careers striving to achieve.
Lesly demonstrates exceptional dedication to advocacy and cultural competence that reaches far beyond the classroom. As the CNSA Global Initiatives Director, she has proactively created systemic change within nursing education. She leads her chapter's involvement in the University of the Pacific's Diversity Week and has established a monthly Member Spotlight program to honor the diverse backgrounds of nursing students.
Her commitment to the Latino community is reflected in her active participation in conferences throughout California, where she continuously seeks to enhance her knowledge and effectiveness as an advocate for Hispanic populations in healthcare. With her bilingual abilities and passion for health equity, she serves as a vital bridge between vulnerable populations and essential resources, ensuring access to dignified care.
Lesly has exhibited outstanding dedication to addressing social determinants of health through focused, community-driven initiatives. Her Quality Improvement Project, titled "Enhancing Awareness and Support for Maternal Mental Health in Black and Latina Women During the Perinatal Period," directly confronts several social determinants, including income challenges, healthcare accessibility, and gaps in cultural competence.
By partnering with the Oak Park community in Sacramento, CA, to provide culturally relevant education, she has worked to reduce the stigma surrounding perinatal mental health, a significant barrier that disproportionately affects women of color. At Clara's House in Sacramento, Lesly leveraged her bilingual skills to support uninsured Latino patients, effectively addressing language barriers and improving access to care for one of the most vulnerable populations in the healthcare system.
Her volunteer work with Rock Medicine further highlights her commitment to meeting patients where they are, offering free medical services to individuals from all walks of life, regardless of their social or economic circumstances, thus helping to alleviate health disparities in diverse community settings.
Lesly has consistently surpassed expectations by transforming her role as a nursing student into a platform for advocacy, education, and systemic change, especially through her social media platforms. She often addresses injustices and advocates for change in both society and the healthcare sector.
While numerous nursing students focus strictly on clinical skills, Lesly has actively sought leadership roles that elevate marginalized voices and foster enduring institutional change. The Member Spotlight program she developed showcases her innovative thinking and initiative by identifying a gap in cultural representation and creating a sustainable solution to fill it.
Her commitment to attending conferences throughout California independently reflects her dedication to self-directed learning and professional growth beyond the standard curriculum. Lesly's volunteer work with Rock Medicine and Clara's House exemplifies her willingness to serve underserved populations, even during her limited free time.
