Her ability to anticipate sensory needs, communicate effectively, and adapt care plans for neurodiverse patients has transformed the hospital experience for countless families.
I would like to recognize Kylie for the extraordinary care and compassion she shows to every patient, but especially to those with developmental delays, including those on the autism spectrum. As a bedside nurse and with her additional BCBA training, Kylie brings a unique and invaluable skill set to all the units that she works on.
She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that every patient feels safe, respected, and understood. Her ability to anticipate sensory needs, communicate effectively, and adapt care plans for neurodiverse patients has transformed the hospital experience for countless families.
Whether it’s creating personalized visual schedules to ease anxiety, using alternative communication tools, or simply offering an extra moment of calm presence, Kylie delivers care that is thoughtful, evidence-based, and deeply human. She advocates fiercely for those who may struggle to advocate for themselves and works closely with families to build trust and comfort.
Most recently, Kylie worked with a patient and family on 7 South, along with our psychology team, to develop visual aid cards to assist the patient during an especially difficult and extended hospital admission. These visual care cards helped the patient regain a little control in situations that would have previously left the patient totally dysregulated.
Within 24 hours of introducing these cards, the patient needed to have her port reaccessed, which is normally a trigger for her. Thanks to the addition of the cards, the patient was successfully reaccessed (at 4am, no less), remained calm, and went back to sleep soon after, which has never happened before. Her mom told me the next morning that it was the best reaccess she's ever had.
I believe that Kylie's continued advocating and collaboration with the patient's family ultimately led to this success. Kylie is more than deserving of this honor as she provides exceptional, person-centered care that makes a lasting impact on patients, families, and fellow healthcare workers. Her passion, patience, and professionalism for her patients are truly inspiring.
