Professor Johnson doesn’t just teach—he connects, encourages, and uplifts.
When I think about the kind of educator who changes lives, Professor Kurt Johnson comes immediately to mind. During one of the most challenging courses in our program, Professor Johnson stepped into a new teaching role with humility, humor, and heart. Despite being naturally introverted and never having taught this course before, he quickly became the most approachable and supportive figure in our academic journey.

I remember a particularly difficult week when our cohort was overwhelmed by both the complexity of the material and the emotional toll of nursing school. Sensing the stress, Professor Johnson didn’t just deliver content—he created moments of joy in the midst of chaos. He came prepared with Kahoot games to review tough topics, infused his lectures with well-timed humor, and stayed after class to answer questions for as long as we needed.

What stood out the most was how much he truly cared. When our campus was impacted by unexpected flooding, he took it upon himself to ensure that every student felt informed and supported. He sent clear updates, checked in on us, and maintained a positive, steady presence that helped calm a very uncertain time.

It was also evident that he constantly sought to improve for our sake. Week by week, his teaching became more confident and more tailored to our needs. He listened to feedback, adapted his methods, and went out of his way to make sure no one was left behind.

Professor Johnson doesn’t just teach—he connects, encourages, and uplifts. He leads with empathy and embodies everything that the DAISY Award stands for. I feel incredibly lucky to have had him as a professor and will carry the lessons he taught me—both academic and personal—throughout my nursing career.
