Kim exuded confidence, knowledge, and skill, and equally important to us, compassion.
When my dad became rapidly critical and was placed on a ventilator, Kim and J were some of the first to take care of him. Kim has a calm and confidence about her that brought me so much comfort. J also worked with Kim and creatively solved problems when lines and tubes were everywhere, all sorts of medications were due at the same time, and it all seemed like chaos. They were especially good when there were setbacks, giving us realistic words of encouragement. They were steadfast pillars in his recovery, and it brought the family relief knowing and seeing how skilled they were in their gifts of caring. It takes a LOT to work in critical care day in and day out. Even though we pestered them with unending questions, we were always met with positive explanations, kindness, and extra care in such a vulnerable time.

Let me start by saying that Kim Stevens epitomizes the term caregiver. We came into the ICU, and my husband, M, was intubated only a day or two before we met Kim. My husband’s situation was very complex, and he required an enormous amount of attention. Kim exuded confidence, knowledge, and skill, and equally important to us, compassion. Kim spoke in a way that was reassuring, even in difficult moments. I watched her titrate medication to manage blood pressure and heart rhythm situations. I was completely fascinated with her ability to be calm, cool, and collected. She was able and willing to answer my questions and in a way that I could understand, and frequently took extra time to alert me to things to expect, which helped me tremendously. I'm sure she had to repeat herself to me numerous times, but she was so kind and patient. I was moved to tears easily, and she took moments to calm my fears. On future shifts where she was not assigned to us, she took time to come in and check on my husband. She even found us when my husband was moved to the floor and popped in to say hello. She had a new nurse working with her, and from my observation, I thought, what a wonderful teacher and example of professionalism she was for a new employee. It takes a special kind of person to be a nurse and provide care not only to patients but their families. Kim is an invaluable, professional asset to the ICU SOUTH team and provides exceptional care.
