When it comes to leadership, there are certain qualities an individual must have. Leaders should lead by example and set the bar and standards for their team. If Webster's Dictionary had a picture of an example of leadership, Ken Daniel's headshot would be front and center. Ken genuinely cares for his team, not just the team on his unit, but his division as a whole, and the other areas in the hospital. Ken works early mornings to ensure he sees staff, but not just staff on his unit, but staff throughout the hospital. Recently, someone approached me and excitedly told me the nurses in their division (Women's) had shared that Ken had come in and rounded during the weekend, and the nurses felt so supported by that. If a team member has an interest in exploring other areas, Ken does everything in his power to set them up for the opportunity in their area of interest. Ken supports his team without hesitation, from putting on the "code backpack" and responding to RRTs/MSETS, working side by side with his team, never being too busy to be a resource. Ken is an example many nurses look up to and encourages them to take the leadership route in furthering their careers. I have worked with many leaders in my decade of nursing, but I mean it when I say Ken has empowered me and encouraged me to always rise to the occasion and be the change I want to see.
