Kelley completed a start of care visit on a Saturday to a patient and family that does not speak English and is also unable to read or write in any language. The patient has complex medical needs and requires a lot of education on how to manage the new NG tube and medications.
Through the interpreter, Kelley learned that the patient had not received any medication since being discharged from the hospital on Friday because his mother was unsure of the medication orders. Kelley provided extensive education, but the titrating schedule of the medication was very confusing for his mother. Kelley ensured that the patient's mother understood what to give on Saturday and arranged for a second visit on Sunday.
Kelley went back into the home on Sunday and brought multiple colors of garage sale stickers and was able to make a schedule using the stickers to ensure that his mother could easily tell what medication was given based on the color of the sticker on the medication and the syringe! This creative problem-solving ensured the patient's mother understood the dose, and she was able to safely administer his medications.
