Kay was able to show me that the professors at Allen College were not only there to teach me how to become an amazing nurse, but also how to grow as an individual outside of my nursing career.
Kay was nominated by multiple students.

Moving away from my family and friends was a very difficult adjustment at first. The feelings of being alone, while participating in such a difficult major while also working and trying to make a life in the Cedar Valley came with many complications. I started at Allen College in August of 2023; I met many of my lifelong friends in the first week and met many staff members I will remember for the rest of my life, Kay being one. I have had Kay as a professor or clinical instructor for three out of my four semesters.

In the one semester, I did not have Kay, she made sure to check in on me, to ensure that I was still doing the best that I could in school and my personal life. I have been in Kay’s office for multiple reasons, some being personal, needing advice on how to handle situations. Kay was able to show me that the professors at Allen College were not only there to teach me how to become an amazing nurse, but also how to grow as an individual outside of my nursing career.

It will be a sad day when Kay decides to retire as a professor because she has a personality that is impactful in many different ways. It is difficult to put into words how much I appreciate her as a professor and mentor. I honestly believe that I would not be the person or future nurse I am today without the guidance of Kay.

Kay is a very personable teacher and cares a lot about her students and success. In mental health, she understands that it isn’t for everyone but makes the content fun and enjoyable; and Kay is very passionate about teaching mental health and making sure that each patient is seen as a person rather than a diagnosis. She takes the time to get to know each student and truly cares about them.
