She sits with patients and their families during her daily rounds, listens to their concerns, and tries to work collaboratively with staff to find the best solutions.
I am nominating Karie Lynch, MSN, RN, MEDSURG-BC for the DAISY Nurse Leader Award for the following reasons. First, Karie strives every day to motivate her staff to improve themselves and their practice. For me personally, Karie has motivated me to improve myself by inviting me to come to the 6th floor Telemetry to learn to be a relief charge nurse and preceptor, which were opportunities not available on my old unit. From this, she has motivated me and given me the resources to pursue and obtain my certification in MedSurg, precept new nurses, and to go back to school for my BSN. Also, when the initial application to Wellstar's Aspiring Leader Program was not approved, Karie did not give up, and because of her dedication to my growth, I was approved for the spring 2025 Cohort.

My growth is not the exception on our floor but the rule. Karie has elevated many of our nurses to embrace new leadership opportunities that fit them and their goals for growth and development. Also, Karie embraces the development of the nursing profession by supporting 6th Floor Telemetry in its new role as the Dedicated Education Unit of the hospital for our academic partner Kennesaw State University and its nursing students. Karie not only works to improve her staff, but she also works to improve outcomes for the patients on the unit. Two EBP projects have been implemented on 6th floor telemetry which has positively impacted patient outcomes. The first is the Sunflower Projects, which strives to make patients with “invisible” or not easily seen disabilities more visible. This can include patients who have Autism needing less physical touch or having signage for patients who are deaf. Alongside this project, Karie has implemented the development and use of the Communication Cart. This cart includes things like a picture board for patients who are mute to use to communicate, magnifying sheets to give to patients who are visually impaired, and more. These two projects have improved communication between staff and patients, increased awareness of barriers to health promotion, and increased overall well-being for our patients.

As a leader, it is one thing to just give people the tools to improve, but you must also have them buy into wanting to improve themselves and the lives of their patients, and Karie does this by creating an uplifting culture on the unit and role modeling exemplary behavior. Karie, along with our ANM, love to celebrate the wins on our unit. This can be nurses getting their certification, CNAs getting ROSE awards, or work anniversaries. It can be life events such as staff getting married, having babies, or birthdays. It doesn’t matter how big or small the win, Karie will find a way to celebrate it. On the flip side, when there are mistakes on the unit, Karie makes sure that these are opportunities for learning for everyone rather than just punishing a single person because she knows that a unit that learns together grows together.

Along with the uplifting culture Karie has developed on our unit she role models exemplary behavior every day. Even when the unit seems to be on fire, I have rarely ever seen Karie frazzled by it. She sits with patients and their families during her daily rounds, listens to their concerns, and tries to work collaboratively with staff to find the best solutions. When staff are stressed, she has an open-door policy and allows you to come and vent in her office if you need to and will offer sound advice or a new perspective on the situation if needed. There are about a million other reasons that I believe Karie Lynch, MSN, RN, MEDSURG-BC should receive the DAISY Nurse Leader Award, but I hope I have conveyed it well in this nomination.
