Kalyn creates a supportive learning environment, always encouraging questions and ensuring explanations meet each teammate's or the patient's needs. Kalyn's proactive approach to education not only enhances the knowledge and skills of our team but also fosters a culture of professional growth and collaboration.
I am honored to nominate Kalyn Haar for the DAISY Nurse Leader Award. Kalyn exemplifies the essence of compassionate care and since becoming a clinical supervisor, has fostered wonderful teamwork and commitment to high standards of care. Kalyn ignites extraordinary compassionate care within the team by fostering a haven of safety for staff—both physically and emotionally. A key example of this was when a healthcare team member experienced sexual harassment from a patient. Upon becoming aware of the situation, Kalyn acted swiftly and decisively to address the inappropriate behavior. She ensured the team member felt supported and heard, taking immediate steps to correct the issue while maintaining professionalism. Kalyn fostered an environment where the team member felt safe to speak up and reassured her that such behavior would not be tolerated. This situation highlights her unwavering dedication to creating a workplace where staff are protected both physically and emotionally, ensuring everyone can focus on delivering compassionate, quality care without fear of harassment.

As a passionate advocate for a healthy work environment, Kalyn promotes resilience across the team. Through open communication, thoughtful recognition, and genuine support, Kalyn will always celebrate every success, large or small. She regularly sends eCards and WOW cards to acknowledge team members' achievements, building team spirit and creating a workplace culture where everyone feels valued and appreciated. Kalyn was a driving force behind our “Runner of the Month” award. Our nurses take patients to all their tests and imaging off the unit. This can be very demanding of our nursing staff as they must find another nurse to cover their current patients on the floor. To recognize the nurses' hard work, Kalyn created our runner of the month award that acknowledges their extra steps but also the nurse's ability and dedication to patient safety by ensuring their patients get to their tests and their other patients still on the unit are being cared for.

Kalyn also demonstrates exceptional leadership by dedicating her time and expertise to educating our newer teammates on our patient conditions. She has the ability to break down complex patient conditions, ensuring that the teammates feel confident in understanding and managing these specialized patient populations. Kalyn creates a supportive learning environment, always encouraging questions and ensuring explanations meet each teammate's or the patient's needs. Kalyn's proactive approach to education not only enhances the knowledge and skills of our team but also fosters a culture of professional growth and collaboration. Professional growth and development within the unit are driven by Kalyn, who actively empowers team members to enhance their skills and expertise. She has encouraged new team members to take on leadership roles, such as preceptors, charge nurses, or unit champions. To date, we have seen over a 50% increase in night shift RN teammates move into leadership roles or become a unit champion. I attribute much of this growth to Kalyn's encouragement and uplifting mindset. To support their growth, Kalyn developed a detailed charge nurse notebook, which outlines responsibilities, best practices, and guidelines to empower new leaders. Kalyn has held team meetings with new leadership that provide an opportunity to share knowledge, address challenges, and foster collaboration.

She has also been instrumental in improving workflow with our Healthcare Technicians during overnight shifts to ensure that they remain focused and efficient throughout their shifts. This has greatly improved overall unit teamwork and created a culture of accountability. Kalyn embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award by consistently going above and beyond to create a thriving team culture and deliver extraordinary care. It is a privilege to work alongside such a remarkable nurse.
